Halloween: Kid's Treat or Pagan Trick?
By
William J. Schnoebelen
An
old proverb says, "When you sup with the devil, use a long
spoon." Presumably, NO genuine Christian would want to sup with the
devil at all and yet many may be doing so in ignorance.
As
a former witch high priest now saved by Jesus, I was astonished by how
many Christians let their kids celebrate Halloween. Some churches even
sponsor "haunted houses" and similar events on what is the
Number One satanic "helliday" of the year. Halloween used to be
called Samhain, and is still celebrated as an ancient pagan festival of
the dead by witches all over the world. Unfortunately, just giving the
date a "holy" name like All Hallows' Eve or All Saints' Eve
cannot change its grisly character. Halloween is an occasion when the
ancient gods (actually demons) are worshiped with human sacrifice. The
apostle Paul warns us: "But I say, that the things which the Gentiles
sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that
ye should have fellowship with devils" (1 Cor. 10:20).
If
you are a Christian parent, God has given you a precious responsibility in
your children. Remember, their ability to resist spiritual wickedness is
much less than yours. If you allow your children to participate in
Halloween (Trick or Treating, costume parties, etc.) you are allowing them
to play on "the devil’s turf," and Satan will definitely press
his home court advantage. You are opening up doorways into their young
lives for evil by bringing them into a kind of "fellowship" with
these ancient "gods."
We
are commanded not to become involved with the unfruitful works of darkness
(Eph. 5:11). Both from my experience as a witch, and since getting saved,
as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ, I have seen far too many
examples of how breaking this command works out in lives. Remember, while
we have God's promise of protection for ourselves and our children, that
promise may not hold if we allow our children to celebrate this dark
holiday. Case after case has come to us of children in rebellion. In many
of these families, the problem can be traced back to the children being
exposed to Halloween at a young age. It is hard enough to raise children
these days in a Godly way without exposing them to Satan's realm.
Many
Christians celebrate holidays, such as Halloween, without thinking about
their origins or true meaning. It is impossible to separate Halloween from
the Druids because they originated the "holiday."
For
several hundred years before Christ, the Celts inhabited what is now
France, Germany, England, Scotland and Ireland. Celtic priests were called
Druids. These people were eventually conquered by the Romans.
Information
about the Celts and Druids comes from Caesar and the Roman historians,
Greek writings from about 200 B.C., and very early records found in
Ireland. Greek and Roman writings about the Druids dwell heavily on their
frequent and barbaric human sacrifices. The ancient Irish texts say little
about human sacrifices, but detail the Druids' use of magic to raise
storms, lay curses on places, kill by the use of spells, and create
magical obstacles.
Human
Sacrifices
Davies,
however, a 16th century writer who traced his family lineage directly back
to Druid priests who fought against Caesar, clearly describes the human
sacrifices of his ancestors and the secret sacrifices still performed
regularly by the Druids of his time.
By
47 A.D., Rome finally defeated the Druids in England and outlawed human
sacrifices. The few remaining Druids went underground.
Today
a growing group of people claiming to be of direct Druid descent, still
practice their religion, including human sacrifice. Those in England still
perform ceremonies at Stonehenge.
November
1st was the Celtic new year.
October
31st was celebrated by the Druids with many human sacrifices and a
festival honoring their sun god and Samhain, the lord of the dead. They
believed that the sinful souls of those who died during the year were in a
place of torment, and would be released only if Samhain was pleased with
their sacrifices.
Monks
Fascinated By Druids
Irish
records tell of the fascination the Catholic monks had with the powerful
Druids, and Druids soon became important members of their monasteries.
Pope Gregory the Great decided to incorporate the Druids' holiday into the
church. He made the proclamation, "They are no longer to sacrifice
beasts to the devil, but they may kill them for food to the praise of God,
and give thanks to the giver of all gifts for His bounty." Pope
Gregory III moved the church festival of October 31st to November 1st and
called it All Hallows or All Saints' Day. Pope Gregory IV decreed that the
day was to be a universal church observance. The term Halloween comes from
All Hallows Eve.
The
founding fathers of America refused to permit the holiday to be observed
because they knew it was a pagan holiday. Halloween was not widely
celebrated in the U.S. until about 1900. In the 1840's there was a
terrible potato famine in Ireland which sent thousands of Catholic Irish
to America. They brought Halloween with them.
The
modern custom of going from door to door asking for food and candy goes
back to the time of the Druids. They believed that sinful, lost souls were
released upon the earth by Samhain for one night on October 31st while
they awaited their judgment. They were thought to throng about the houses
of the living and were greeted with banquet-laden tables. People greatly
feared these spirits and thought that the spirits would harm and even kill
them if the sacrifices they gave did not appease Samhain. They carved
demonic faces into pumpkins or large turnips, placing a candle in them to
keep the evil spirits away from their homes.
The
tradition of bobbing for apples and giving out nuts came from a Roman
addition to the Druidic New Year’s eve. The Romans worshiped Pomona who
was the goddess of the harvest. They combined their harvest festival to
Pomona with Halloween.
Very
little archeological evidence of the Druids has been found, but there is
excellent agreement between the Roman and Irish documents. Both clearly
state that the knowledge of the Druids was never committed to writing but
passed from generation to generation by oral teaching. This was to protect
their secrets. In his writings, Davies indicates that he came under much
persecution by his family for putting in writing his information about
Druids. The same is true today. Nothing is put into writing. The Druids
continue on secretly with much the same traditions.
The
widespread problem of harmful substances such as razor blades, drugs,
poisons, needles, etc. being placed in the Halloween treats here in
America is no accident. Testimonies of several ex-Satanists show that
these children killed and injured by the "treats" are sacrifices
to Satan (or Samhain). Satanists throughout the world continue to perform
human sacrifices on Halloween.
Is
this something you want YOUR child to participate in?

HALLOWEEN: A
Celebration of Evil
From A Twist of Faith by Berit Kjos
"We are of God . . .
[but] the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one." 1 John
5:19
While the evidence for
supernatural evil multiplies all around us, more and more people deny it.
They may believe in cosmic forces and bad vibes. But sin or Satan? These
negatives don't fit the new paradigm. In October 1995, our local Los Altos
school district held a large public meeting to discuss Halloween
festivities. Most parents were angry at some proposed limitations on the
traditional in-school celebration of a "harmless holiday." Why
worry about the small minority who felt offended by its ancient link to a
dead religion? Only a few minority voices were heard. A former Wiccan
priest explained that the old Celtic witchcraft that gave birth to
Halloween is anything but dead. Flourishing in today's pagan revival, it
has become an official religion with tax-exempt status (1).
A few parents shared their
concerns about programs that compelled children to celebrate occult
themes. They knew well that pagan symbols and occult amusement were
desensitising children to a fast-spreading subculture obsessed with death,
spells and black magic -- not just at Halloween but all year long (2).
The majority booed, jeered,
and refused to listen. "These are religious objections to secular
events," declared the president of the board, Phil Faillaice.
Everyone seemed to have forgotten that a different minority had, only nine
months earlier, banned Christmas songs as offensive to their beliefs. But
times have changed. By the end of the evening, the pro-Halloween group had
won its case, and the media spread the "good" news from coast to
coast. "We have the holiday back again," declared Bay Area
witch, Zsuzsanna Budapest. "These pagan calendars are imprinted in
our genes. They cannot be taken away." (3). "It's hard to give
up a good party," added Daniel Melia, UC Berkeley professor of Celtic
languages. "Satan is a Christian notion. This is a pre-Christian
celebration."
He is wrong about Satan.
The Old Testament mentions Satan fourteen times, and that doesn't include
all his other names. From beginning to end, the Bible shows how Lucifer
has always been stirring rebellion against God and hatred for His people.
But then as now, the good news outshines the bad: the evil one could never
cause more trouble than God would allow (4).
The clash between two
cultures at Halloween is part of the war raging in the unseen, and the
enemy's strategy hasn't changed since the Old Testament days when God
warned, "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put
darkness for light, and light for darkness." (Isaiah 5:20) Year after
year, Satan keeps on trying to trick us into believing the opposite.
As Bibles gather dust, his
influence multiplies. Few understand his schemes better than Valerie
Duffy, a former witch. "The feast of Samhain (sah-ween) is an unholy
Sabbath observed by occultists world-wide," she explains. Freed from
the demonic forces that once controlled her life, she now lives in an
"upstate New York" community that often publicises Wiccan coven
meetings and "full moon" celebrations. Each October, she fights
-- and wins (5) — a spiritual battle against oppressive forces that
intensify their attacks near the Wiccan holiday. Valerie knows all too
well why Neopagans love Halloween. The old Celtic "Sabbat" is
their main feast -- a window of time when the walls between the physical
and spiritual worlds supposedly become thin enough to allow easy
crossovers. This was the time to catch up with one's ancestors and other
spirits from the underworld (6).
But don't think the Vigil
of Samhain was just a fun holiday. The "Lord of the Dead",
Samhain himself, is no deity to laugh at. Valerie explains why: On October
31, black-cloaked Druids bearing torches would go door to door to select
humans for their New Year's sacrifice to the Lord of the Dead. In return
for the child or infant, they would leave a hollowed turnip with candle
light shining through the carved face -- a satanic counterfeit for the
biblical Passover.
In the revelling that took
place on that night to Samhain, the demons supposedly loosed for the night
would pass over the homes "marked" by the carved lantern. Those
families had provided the required gift or sacrifice. Other homes could be
hit -- sometimes with sudden death. The children selected for sacrifice
were tossed into a bonfire. The Druids called it a bone-fire since only
the bones were left. From the agonising screams of the dying, the divining
priests would foretell the future of the village (7).
Does the last statement
sound familiar? Remember how the shaman or medicine man in Disney's
Pocahontas read the future in the smoke from his ritual fire. When you
look behind today's idealised images of the world's pagan religions, you
find some awesome similarities. Small wonder since Satan, the mastermind
behind the Druid rituals, tends to repeat the same tactics wherever he
works. Walking into a large bookstore in mid-October I discovered a huge
new display. Startled, I stared at an child-sized open casket filled with
vampire books. The wooden casket was leaning against a large imitation
stone altar. On it, stood an embellished cross with candles on each side.
In the centre, displayed like a Bible, lay a large book. Horrified at the
mockery of Christianity, I checked the cover and found Memnoch the Devil,
the popular vampire book by Anne Rice. On the grey cathedral-like wall
above the altar hung a cross. I hurried out of the store.
As in Old Testament days,
Americans have forgotten "how to blush" (8) at what God calls
evil. But those who love God His Word can resist the spreading darkness.
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for
pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that
exalts itself against the knowledge of God. (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)
