History Repeats

“The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.  10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.  11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.” Ecclesiastes 1:9-11

God’s people do not remember their history, they forget the past and so are doomed to repeat it; but also they cannot understand prophecy in the way we need to understand it. There are so many spurious views of prophecy because the principles are not known or followed. History repeating is one of the clear principles laid out in God’s Word.

I want to show you why these principles are so important and how God looks upon prophets who teach prophecy if they don’t have strategic and very simple biblically based principles of prophetic interpretation.

Ezekiel 13:1 “And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,  2 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts, Hear ye the word of the LORD;  3 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!  4 O Israel, thy prophets are like the foxes in the deserts. 5 Ye have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the LORD.”

What Battle? The last battle of Armageddon, God is looking for a people to stand in this time period, but the prophets have done something that causes people not to stand. What have they done?

6 “They have seen vanity and lying divination, saying, The LORD saith: and the LORD hath not sent them: and they have made others to hope that they would confirm the word.”

In other words, when they give a prophecy saying thus and thus but God hasn’t sent them, people listen to them hoping they can confirm it. But how can you confirm prophecy? Notice what it says:

Ezekiel 13:7-13. “Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, The LORD saith it; albeit I have not spoken? Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord GOD.  And mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of my people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD. Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, Peace; and there was no peace; and one built up a wall, and, lo, others daubed it with untempered morter: Say unto them which daub it with untempered morter, that it shall fall: there shall be an overflowing shower; and ye, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a stormy wind shall rend it. Lo, when the wall is fallen, shall it not be said unto you, Where is the daubing wherewith ye have daubed it? Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even rend it with a stormy wind in my fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in mine anger, and great hailstones in my fury to consume it.”

To consume what? The wall; God has a controversy with this wall the false prophets have put around the people. What was the false wall? It was the protection message of peace and safety, and the way they built this wall around the people giving them false security is by daubing it with untempered mortar.

If you are laying bricks and you don’t mix the mortar just right, what happens to your brick wall? It crumbles. If it is not tempered just right, if the mortar is not mixed just right, the wall falls apart. The wall of peace and safety around God’s people in the end that the false prophets proclaim is ‘Peace, Peace’. But the way they uphold the wall is by untempered mortar. Untempered mortar symbolizes untrue principles of Prophetic interpretation

Ezekiel 13:14-16 “So will I break down the wall that ye have daubed with untempered morter, and bring it down to the ground, so that the foundation thereof shall be discovered, and it shall fall, and ye shall be consumed in the midst thereof: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.  Thus will I accomplish my wrath upon the wall, and upon them that have daubed it with untempered morter, and will say unto you, The wall is no more, neither they that daubed it; To wit, the prophets of Israel which prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace, saith the Lord GOD.”

When you get false prophets, and I’m not talking about those who say they are a prophet; I’m talking about those who give false prophetic principles; false understanding of prophecy; the only way they can seemingly uphold it is by untempered mortar; false principles of prophetic interpretation.

If you follow clear principles, there is no way you can have false understandings of prophecy! If the principles are sound, the wall will be sound. That is why principles were very important in the time of the Millerites and they are very important now! God gave Miller 14 principles and these principles they used, even against Miller himself when he started getting off track after the 1844 time period.

There is a writer of the 1940’s and 50’s, Pastor Louis Were, he has some very strong and important prophetic principles, very sound principles; but the interesting thing is when you start reading some of his writings, he diverges in places from his own principles. When it comes to Revelation 17, instead of saying Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Pagan Rome, Papal Rome the United States, the United Nations and the resurrection of the Papacy, when the deadly wound is healed, he see Egypt, Assyria, and so he puts it all out of context. He diverges from his own principles.

Principles are very important! In our next section we are going to look at eight prophetic keys that unlock Daniel 11 with clarity.

1 Corinthians 10:11 “Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.”

“We are standing on the threshold of great and solemn events. Many of the prophecies are about to be fulfilled in quick succession. Every element of power is about to be set to work. Past history will be repeated; old controversies will arouse to new life, and peril will beset God's people on every side. Intensity is taking hold of the human family. It is permeating everything upon the earth. . . .

“Study Revelation in connection with Daniel, for history will be repeated. . . . We, with all our religious advantages, ought to know far more today than we do know…

“As we near the close of this world's history, the prophecies relating to the last days especially demand our study. The last book of the New Testament Scriptures is full of truth that we need to understand. Satan has blinded the minds of many so that they have been glad of any excuse for not making the Revelation their study. But Christ through His servant John has here declared what shall be in the last days; and He says, "Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein."  Testimonies to Ministers 116

“Again and again I have been shown that the past experiences of God's people are not to be counted as dead facts. We are not to treat the record of these experiences as we would treat a last year's almanac. The record is to be kept in mind, for history will repeat itself. The darkness of the mysteries of the night is to be illuminated with the light of heaven. . . .” Publishing Ministry 175

“When the third angel's message is preached as it should be, power attends its proclamation, and it becomes an abiding influence. It must be attended with divine power, or it will accomplish nothing. I am often referred to the parable of the ten virgins, five of whom were wise, and five foolish. This parable has been and will be fulfilled to the very letter, for it has a special application to this time, and, like the third angel's message, has been fulfilled and will continue to be present truth till the close of time.” Review and Herald, August 19, 1890

We need to understand something regarding the Sealing; the Seal of God, in a very clear and concise way is the Sabbath; but Sister White makes the statement that the Sealing is not just the Sabbath, but it is a settling into the truth both spiritually and intellectually. We can have the intellect all day long, but if we don’t have an experience in Christ, there is no power.

The experience in Christ comes from the understanding of the prophecy—they go hand in hand. It is much more than an intellectual breakdown of verses—it’s an experience, it’s an abiding influence.

“The parable of the ten virgins of Matthew 25 also illustrates the experience of the Adventist people.”  Great Controversy 393
